Apprentices honing skills during economic tough times

We’re experiencing firsthand what a tough time it is for our apprentices in today’s economic climate. The lack of work opportunities and ongoing economic challenges are creating knock-on effects impacting the future of apprenticeships, particularly in the construction sector.

Recent trends indicate a sharp decline in the number of businesses willing to take on apprentices, primarily due to a significant reduction in available work. This reluctance stems from the uncertainty businesses face; many are struggling to secure enough work to sustain their current operations and view the addition of an apprentice as a substantial commitment, especially with limited work in the pipeline.

This situation poses a setback for young individuals eager to launch careers in the trades. Over the past few years, these careers have been promoted as viable and promising options, offering the benefits of stability and long-term job prospects. However, the reality has shifted dramatically. Many apprentice candidates, despite their enthusiasm and readiness to set out on their professional journeys, find themselves at a standstill, with no opportunities available.

The ripple effects of the economic downturn are now forcing some young hopefuls to reconsider their career paths. Faced with the harsh reality of limited apprenticeship openings, they are forced to explore alternative employment options, often in different fields, just to manage their living expenses. This shift not only disrupts their career planning but also highlights the broader impact of economic instability on vocational education and job training.

Despite the current challenges and lack of sustainable work, for many in the industry the focus is on learning and honing the skills of the trade, preparing for a future when things look a little brighter. Recent apprentice events, such as the ‘Master Electricians Apprentice Challenge’ throughout New Zealand, show that the talent and passion for the trades is very much alive. Seeing our apprentices succeed in time like these is a great boost. There is a mindset out there amongst young apprentices in the industry to ‘keep the faith’ and prepare for the time when things start to pick up. When this happens, they will be ready and raring to go!
