If you are looking to become an apprentice and have any questions, visit our Apprentice FAQs

ATT will talk to you and understand what you are looking for in an apprentice. We then recruit and employ the apprentice and they are contracted out to you. Your role is a 'host' business, where you will be responsible for all the on-job training.

You and the apprentice are given the same ATT area manager, who will be your main point of contact. They mentor and support the apprentice through all the off-job elements of the apprenticeship -  booking their training, ensuring they are competing their bookwork, connecting with them regularly to make sure they are on track and dealing with any matters that arise. The area manager can also deal with any apprentice issues that can up from your point of view, regarding performance, attendance or just general queries.

We want to make sure that the apprenticeship is successful for both you and the apprentice.

Every ATT apprentice will undergo our comprehensive recruitment process. This involves:

  • Formal interviews by our recruitment team
  • Numeracy, literacy and mechanical reasoning testing
  • Reference checks
  • Criminal background check
  • Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing

Additionally, ATT apprentices have:

  • At least a restricted drivers licence
  • We will only take on apprentices that have a good attitude and are committed to completing the apprenticeship

You will be presented with prescreened candidates and interview any that you are interested in to ensure you are confident they will be a good fit for your business. You make final decision of who becomes your apprentice, and then ATT deals with all the paperwork.

Your apprentice arrives ready to go on day with:

  • Their own basic toolkit
  • PPE
  • Having completed a basic site safe course

As ATT employs the apprentice directly, we take care of all payments, such as ACC, Kiwisaver, wages whilst on block course, holiday pay, bereavement and sick leave. The apprentice will pay the weekly training fees.

As an ATT host business, you only pay for the hours worked by your apprentice, which is invoiced on a weekly basis. You don't pay for the apprentice whilst they are on leave, on training courses or sick. The apprentice completes a weekly timesheet, which you approve and you are charged based on that.

If you take on a new, first year apprentice, for the first twelve months of their apprenticeship you will receive $500 per month.

Please contact us for a breakdown of charge-out rates in your trade.

ATT simplifies the process of training an apprentice and we have worked with thousands of apprentices over the years, so we understand what makes a good apprentice. You will receive top-quality candidates, as well as a full administration, HR and management package system for the apprentice.

Our specialist HR team deal with any HR issues and also stay across any legislation issues that can impact.

As ATT directly employs the apprentice, this mitigates risk for our host businesses.so you can focus on growing your business.

ATT has top-quality candidates ready to start their apprenticeship. However, if we do not have a suitable candidate for your business, we can recruit on your behalf. ATT has a proven recruitment process to ensure we only select high-calibre candidates. We always work towards the needs of our host businesses where possible.

Whether you have found a candidate or ATT has recruited for you, every candidate will be required to complete the same recruitment process. We are happy to work with candidates you may have found yourself.

Depending on the chosen trade, the length of an ATT apprenticeship differs. However, it usually takes two to five years to complete. ATT apprenticeships include:

  • Plumbing, gasfitting & drainlaying apprenticeships are structured over five years (or 10,000 hours of practical work experience)
  • Drainlaying apprenticeships take two years to complete (or 4,000 hours)
  • Electrical apprenticeships take three to four years to complete (or 6,000-8,000 hours), depending on prior experience and qualifications

We know work can be unpredictable at times, or occasionally an apprentice doesn't quite gel with your business. ATT provides a handback option with three weeks notice. Depending on the situation, ATT will seek to place the apprentice with a new host business. Your area manager will work with you on a replacement, if required, or next steps.

The Apprenticeship Boost is a payment made to employers to help them keep and take on new apprentices. It is available to employers of eligible first-year apprentices only.

ATT pays up to $500 a month , in weekly payments, for the first 12 months of a first year apprentice.
