The New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Trade (Level 4) – General Electrical (4204) represents a significant update and consolidation of the apprenticeship framework for electricians. This new programme was designed to make it easier to become a fully qualified electrician. It combines the different parts of domestic, commercial and industrial electrical work into a single, complete apprenticeship.
The new programme has been rolled out by both Te Pukenga and ETCO and so all new electrical apprentices will be following this version of the training.
The updated programme not only simplifies the training process but also ensures that apprentices are equipped with a broad range of skills and knowledge, making them highly versatile and valuable in today’s changing electrical industry. One of the key features of this new certificate is the inclusion of online on-job and electrical safety courses. These online components allow apprentices to complete essential parts of their training remotely, providing flexibility and making it easier to balance work and study.
The programme also introduces a structured assessment process with capstone exams at the end of both the first and second years. These exams are crucial as they assess the apprentices’ understanding and application of the skills and knowledge they have acquired. Successfully passing these exams is essential for progressing through the programme and for eventual registration.
Block courses (off-jobs), are still a key part of the training and these are delivered either as online, night classes or day classes, depending on the location of the apprentice.
For host electrical companies, this new structure means they can expect a more consistent and comprehensive training schedule for their apprentices. The integration of different specialities into one programme reduces the need for additional training courses, thereby saving time and resources. Also, the move to more digital and remote learning resources shows the ongoing digital change in the industry. This is helping apprentices get ready for modern work environments.
All apprentices will need access to a computer or tablet to complete and submit their on-job assessments. This requirement ensures that apprentices aren’t only learning practical electrical skills but are also becoming proficient in using digital tools that are increasingly important in the industry.
After finishing the qualification, graduates can register for Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) registration. This means they’re fully qualified electricians ready to work in the electrical industry. The industry will have a steady supply of well-trained, flexible and technologically skilled professionals.
This revamped apprenticeship programme aligns with the needs of the modern electrical industry and provides a robust foundation for the next generation of electricians. It should be seen as an opportunity for businesses to enhance the capabilities of their teams and ensure their services remain competitive and compliant with industry standards.
ATT works closely with training providers and apprentices to ensure that apprentices know exactly what they need to do and when. Apprentices who began their apprenticeship on the previous programme will be able to complete it and won’t need to transfer to the new system.
