In the late 1980’s apprentice numbers began to decline dramatically as a career in the trades was no longer considered as desirable. Apprenticeship Training Trust (ATT) was founded in 1991 as a response to the declining numbers of apprenticeships being offered by major public institutions.
Following the creation of Industry Training Organisations in 1992, new apprenticeship agreements between trainee, employer and training organisation were instigated which replaced the old apprenticeship contract. This enabled industries, through these Industry Training Organisations, to promote and fund their own industry training process.
ATT’s founders aimed to shape the future of trade industries by delivering a steady supply of skilled tradespeople and positioning itself as an industry leader in managed apprenticeships. Our unique model combines practical training from host businesses with educational support and mentoring from ATT, providing
the apprentice with support and guidance at every step of the way and ensuring the best possible outcome for them. ATT now recruits, employs, and places apprentices in plumbing, drainlaying, gasfitting and electrical companies throughout New Zealand.
In 2023 we merged with IntoWork Group, the leading national provider of employment, skills and education and support services in Australia. Our shared vision is of vibrant futures through the support of economic and social participation.
Our vision of Vibrant Futures underpins everything we do. As a not-for-profit our focus is on the people we work with a mission of ‘providing opportunities for New Zealanders to train and become successful tradespeople,’ and as such we are always seeking new ways to improve and innovate.
As an organisation, ATT is committed to working with our communities in a way that is consistent with the Principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including partnership, protection and participation.
• We commit to developing strong relationships with Māori hapū and iwi, to consider all perspectives in order to deliver our vision of ‘Vibrant Futures’ for all.
• We seek to protect and promote Māori cultural identity, adhering to proper cultural protocols and enhancing our understanding of Te Ao Māori.
• Enable Māori to have equal access to opportunities and Māori aspirations are supported.
ATT will always be guided by the kaitiaki of those who founded the trust and why it was founded. We believe that to build a successful, sustainable trades industry requires true partnership between ourselves, our apprentices and the businesses we work with. Our connection with the trades community remains at the centre of everything we do, guiding apprentices at the start of their careers and helping trades businesses grow through the advice and support we provide as trusted partners.
We want our whole community to thrive and as such we need to support the growth of tauira Māori on their journey and empower them to create their own future, on their terms leading to a better future for whānau, hapū, iwi and the wider community.
“We’ve been with ATT since the start and one of the things that ATT brings to the apprentices is the help through the block courses, keeping them on task ... having someone with the pastoral care just to help the apprentices. We have a great relationship with ATT, and long may it continue into the future.”
