From 1 January 2025, New Zealand’s Fees Free programme will see changes that will impact how apprenticeship training fees are covered. This shift is important for those in our industry working with apprentices to be aware of and understand, so that their apprentices don’t miss out on vital funding, particularly in today’s difficult economic climate.
What’s new?
The current Fees Free scheme, which funds the first year of study, will be replaced by a new programme that supports the final year of training. This means that, starting from 2025, apprentices in their last year of study may have their fees covered, if they haven’t already benefited from the first-year Fees Free scheme. The fund covers study or work-based training fees up to $12,000 and will be paid as a reimbursement upon completion.
Why the change?
The government aims to bolster apprentices as they near completion of their training, ensuring they have the financial support to finish successfully. This adjustment is intended to lower dropout rates and help apprentices move smoothly into the workforce.
Who’s impacted?
Apprentices in their final year of study, who haven’t previously used the first-year Fees Free, will be able to check their eligibility for the revised scheme.
What actions should be taken?
We will be talking to our apprentices about these changes, but if you get asked any questions apprentices can check their eligibility on the Fees Free website using the National Student Number (NSN) checker.
These changes are a positive step towards supporting apprentices through to the completion of their training.
