How to make the most of your time as an apprentice

The best tradies know that theory and practical skills go hand-in-hand, and the more you level up on both, the faster you’ll grow on the tools and in your career.

Here are some simple tips to help you nail the bookwork and smash it on site!

No worries, nail the knowledge!

Make a study plan: Set aside a few hours each week to study. This will help you stay on track.

Focus on one thing: Finish one topic before moving to the next. Read the relevant codes and standards as you go.

Get ready for practical tests: Look at your study plan and talk to your supervisor about the tasks you’ll be tested on. Try to practice these tasks at work.

Learn from others: Ask your supervisor and workmates about their experiences. This will help you learn from other real-life experiences and understand the work better.

Get help when you need it: Make use of online study sessions to get help with difficult topics or questions.

Don’t forget the apps: There are heaps of useful mobile tools for load calculations, pipe sizing, and compliance docs.

Hands-on hacks

Sitting watching Netflix?: Practise screwing things in by hand, or crimping motions, to build up your grip strength.

For plumbers: Get lots of pipe fitting practice by hand – threaded joints, compression fittings, the works!

For sparkies: Practise stripping wire manually, until you can do it blindfolded!

It’s all about mixing trade theory with hands-on skills. To get ahead, organise and write out what you need to do to help you stay on track, aim to master one skill at a time, and practice the tricks of your trade regularly. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Keep practicing hands-on tasks in your spare time and stick with it, you’ll be a pro in no time!
